The streets of Subiaco came alive again this April as Subiaco proudly presents the third annual Subiaco street party, supported by the City of Subiaco.
This year’s event stretches up Rokeby Road all the way from Roberts Road to Barker Road, and winding down Hay Street – with a carnival atmosphere brought to life with multiple performance stages, roving entertainers, buskers, pop-up bars, food trucks and market stalls.

Taiko 太鼓
are a broad range of Japanese percussion instruments. In Japanese, the term refers to any kind of drum, but outside Japan, it is used specifically to refer to any of the various Japanese drums called wadaiko 和太鼓 – Japanese drums and to the form of ensemble taiko drumming more specifically called kumi-daiko 組太鼓 – set of drums. The process of constructing taiko varies between manufacturers, and the preparation of both the drum body and skin can take several years depending on the method.
Perth’s own Wadaiko & Didge performance ensemble. Founded by a group of Fitness and Music lovers, to share the love of Japanese drums and festival rhythms
Taiko On!
The name is not only a team cry to strive and put all of one’s energy and focus into the drums, but the Japanese characters also resonate with the meaning “Sound of the Drum”
The members of this dynamic troupe have drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds and come together to study and display their love of the Japanese drums to the wider Perth audience.
Their Sensei, Simon Vanyai, originally studied Taiko in the mountains of Nagano, and since bringing his love of Wadaiko back to Australia has helped form four Taiko groups across Tasmania and WA.
Many of the members of Taiko On are Japanese and have relished the opportunity to train in their traditional musical arts whilst living so far from their cultural home. Other members have a long-running love of percussion and are drawn to the elegant movements, powerful rhythms, and teamwork in the synchronised Wadaiko ensemble.
