About Taiko Do WA

We are Taiko lovers offering training and performances in the art of Japanese Taiko Drumming in W.A. Taiko-Do translates as “The Journey of the Drum”.
Our mission at Taiko Do W.A. is to perform, promote and expand the art of Taiko ensemble drumming in Western Australia, and to help grow a local community of people connected through the journey of Taiko.
Taiko Do (pronounced Tyko Dough) – translates as “The Way of the Drum”.
Taiko Do’s journey commenced in 2014 when founder Treoen Phillips travelled to Japan to learn and experience Taiko in the original birthplace of this contemporary art form. Treoen fell in love with the combination of rhythm and movement, together with the discipline and culture of this style of music-making.
In 2015, Treoen and his wife Carole, returned to Japan to study with Art Lee Sensei of the internationally acclaimed group ‘Wadaiko Tokara’. It then became their mission to share their newfound love of Taiko, and its ability to connect the community in their hometown of Perth, Western Australia.
Treoen & Carole began teaching regular Taiko classes in January 2016 with a group of only 6 participants. They have since grown and have now between 20 to 30 members, as well as an exclusive performance team (click here for our team bios) created in 2018, who perform regularly at a variety of private and public events.
