The Tet New Year Celebration was planned at Wanneroo Showground on February 19-20 however organisers announced on Sunday that it would not go ahead. Vietnamese Communities of Australia WA Chapter president Anh Nguyen said they hoped to reschedule a Tet festival during Harmony Week in March. And it happened. Due to the recent lockdown, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year Festival will NOW be held on Friday and Saturday evenings 5th – 6th March at the Girrawheen Senior High School Oval.
FREE admission to enjoy the festivities including a fireworks show.

Hosted by the WA Chapter of Vietnamese Community in Australia, the Tet celebration has increasingly drawing festival-goers from the wider community. Highlights include a wide variety of delicious food, cultural performances, carnival rides, Lion dances and live music as well as a fireworks display to welcome in the Year of the Ox.

Tet celebrations in Perth are an opportunity for everyone to experience the vibrant Vietnamese culture that is such an important part of our community, said Premier of Western Australia Mark McGowan.

Tet Lunar new year celebration in Vietnam

Tet is the most important and popular holiday and festival in Vietnam. It is the Vietnamese New Year marking the arrival of spring based on the Lunar calendar, a lunisolar calendar. The name Tet Nguyen Dan is Sino-Vietnamese for Feast of the very First Morning.
Tet takes place from the first day of the first month of the Lunar calendar around late January or early February until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tet by cooking special holiday foods and cleaning their house. There are a lot of customs practised during Tet such as visiting a person’s house on the first day of the new year (xông nhà), ancestral worship, wishing New Year’s greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people and opening a shop.

Vietnamese Tet is also an occasion
for pilgrims and family reunions. During Tet, Vietnamese visits their relatives and temples, forgetting the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. They consider Tet to be the first day of spring and the festival is often called Hội xuân spring festival.
Like other Asian countries, Vietnamese believe that the colour of red and yellow will bring good fortune, which may explain why these colours can be seen everywhere in Lunar New Year. People consider what they do on the dawn of Tet will determine their fate for the whole year, hence people always smile and behave as nice as they can in the hope for a better year.

It’s a festive time where people return home and visit their families, friends, have large feasts, play traditional games and give out a red pocket. It’s also a good time to reflect, remember our ancestral roots and set goals for the year ahead.

Since the Vietnamese believe that the very first visitor a family receives in the year determines their fortune for the entire year, a person of good temper, morality and success will be the lucky sign for the host family and be invited first into the house. This special activity is called xông đất or xông nhà, which is one of the most important rituals during Tet. According to Vietnamese tradition, if good things come to the family on the first day of the lunar New Year, the entire following year will also be full of blessings.

Lion dance tradition

is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. The lion dance is usually performed during the Chinese New Year and other Chinese traditional, cultural and religious festivals.
A drum, a gong and cymbals accompany the Lion dance. The drum stands for the pulse of the heartbeat of the lion. A particular rhythm is associated with every steps and routine of the Lion. Each school has its own rhythms. The gong and cymbals stand for the thoughts of the Lion. With the drum, they accompany, they create the music of every routine.
