This year Perth Night Noodle Markets event was cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions. The crowd-favourite Night Noodle Markets is set to return to Yagan square in 2021. Little return back to year 2018/2019.

A huge open-air market filled with Asian hawker-style offerings, with punchy, vibrant flavours, all set in a friendly, communal atmosphere.

The lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture and other Asian countries in which performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion costume to bring good luck and fortune. The lion dance is usually performed during the Chinese New Year and other Chinese traditional, cultural and religious festivals.

Some of this year’s stallholders include Perth’s very own Bunga Raya Satay, Saigon Eats, The Modern Eatery, Bangkok Jump Street & Gyoza Joint. These local gems will be joined by Night Noodle Market legends Black Star Pastry, Gelato Messina, Hoy Pinoy, Twistto, Shallot Thai, Waffleland, Sambal Kampung, Donburi Station, Miss Chows and Teppanyaki Noodles.

About Yarn Yee Tong Kung Fu Academy

The northern branch of the Chow Kwoon Yarn Yee Tong Kung Fu Academy was opened by Sifu Quyen Luong in 1995. Today over fifty students of all ages are instructed in the Chow Ka style of kung fu, weaponry, chi kung and lion dance. Students are also trained to perform kung fu and lion dance demonstrations for Chinese New Year and other important events.

The academy is named after the very first school established by the five Chow brothers, who created the Chow Ka style of kung fu. The school was named Chow Kwoon (Chow School), Yarn (kindness) Yee (honour) Tong (branch). The first Chow Kwoon Yarn Yee was built upon the ideals of kindness and righteousness, and these are ideals upheld in the academy both through our attitude towards training and to our conduct in everyday life.

The lion dance is a traditional Chinese dance performed on big occasions, such as the Spring Festival known as Chinese New Year for good luck, as it is believed that the lion is an auspicious animal.

The Night Noodle Markets are part of Good Food Month presented by City in association with the City of Perth.

Two dancers personify each lion, one moving the head and the other one moving the body. Their choreographed and highly coordinated moves breath life into the mythical animal, and give to the audience the feeling of being in front of a lion instead of two disguised dancers. Besides the execution of technical movements, the dancers have to give character to the lion they incarnate so that the lion looks vigorous, expressive and alert.

The colours of lion’s

coats are saffron, golden yellow or red. The Colors symbolize the heroes of the Three Kingdoms period:

Liu Bei / 刘备 the virtuous king is symbolized by the saffron or the golden yellow lion.
Guan Yu / 关⽻, a general and strategist, embodied by the red lion.
Zhang Fei / 张飞, the general whose bravery is famed, is symbolized by the black lion.

Lion dance Drumming :
A drum, a gong and cymbals accompany the Lion dance. The drum stands for the pulse of the heartbeat of the lion. A particular rhythm is associated with every steps and routine of the Lion. Each school has its own rhythms. The gong and cymbals stand for the thoughts of the Lion. With the drum, they accompany, they create the music of every routine.
